03:50 Campaign Ads of Former Presidential Candidates
Audio obtained from several television commercials are available in an online exhibition, The Living Room Candidate, presented by the American Museum of the Moving Image and University of Oklahoma Political Communication Center:
  • Adlai Stevenson, running against General Eisenhower in the 1952 election, produced a television advertisement, focusing on God as a unifying factor.
  • In the 1980 election with the Iranian hostage crisis as a backdrop, the Carter campaign ran an ad emphasizing the President's faith and values. The commercial begins with the spine of a Bible being scanned before zooming out to show President Carter reading it while a narrator reminds the viewer of his consistent position.
  • 06:34 Pew Forum Poll
Referred to throughout the program by Krista and Mr. Dionne, a July 2003 poll surveys views on religious life as it relates to contentious topics such as the presidential campaign, social policy, and perceptions of Islam.
10:15 Excerpt of Speech by Senator Edwards
Candidate Edwards speaks at a Democratic banquet in Linn County, Iowa (2004.01.10).
14:47 Campaign Ad for John F. Kennedy
During the 1960 presidential race, JFK campaigned against Vice-President Nixon. In this video, Senator Kennedy addresses the question whether his loyalties would be divided between his Catholic beliefs and the welfare of the state.
    15:47 Dionne Column
Krista quotes from a Washington Post article entitled "The Democrats' Mutual Morality…" (2004.01.13).
43:53 Remarks by President Bush During Iftaar
Hosting prominent Muslims at the White House, President Bush speaks about religion in generic terms (2004.11.07).
    46:50 Quote of Reinhold Niebuhr
Mr. Cromartie illustrates his point that conservatives can place too much emphasis on the ability of politics to reshape culture by paraphrasing Reinhold Niebuhr, "Politics is the art of finding approximate solutions to basically insoluble problems."

Exact quote can be found in The Children of Light and the Children of Darkness: politics is "the method of finding proximate solutions to insoluble problems".
49:53 Kristof in the New York Times
Krista quotes from Nicholas Kristof's editorial "The God Gulf" declaring that "America is riven today by a 'God gulf' of distrust, dividing churchgoing Republicans from relatively secular democrats… Expect Republicans to wage religious warfare by trotting out God as the new elephant in the race, and some Democrats to respond with hypocrisy, by affecting deep religious convictions."
