Moral Man and Immoral Society: The Public Theology of Reinhold Niebuhr

Correspondence from Teddy Kollek and Jimmy Carter

Mayor of Jerusalem

Dear Ursula:

I picked up this week's Time Magazine and read the article by Hugh Sidey on Jimmy Carter. I was very moved to read that he found inspiration in June Bingham's book on Reinhold as well as in your collection of Reinhold's writings. I found myself walking over to my library shelf, taking Justice and Mercy in hand, and sitting down to read. (If Jimmy Carter can find time, I should be able to as well…). Your husband was truly an exceptional man - and knowing you as well as I do, I can say that you were truly an exceptional team.

I am sure that even Jerusalem would have trouble competing with the Berkshires at this time of year but I do hope that you are planning to visit again soon.

With warm personal regards.

Yours,
Teddy

To Ursula M. Niebuhr

Thank you.
When I heard of your husband's death in 1971, mine was a selfish sorrow — because I had always wanted to meet him. He contributed to my private education more than you could know.

In my acceptance speech at the convention I used one of Dr. Niebuhr's ideas. That love must be translated into justice in order to be effective.

I hope that some day I may be able to thank you personally for the book.

Jimmy
