An Uncomfortability I Can't Pinpoint

(January 2, 2009)

I appreciate that Krista has included coverage of Rick and Kay Warren over the years. The phenomenon that is Saddleback Church is definitely worth noting on a national radio program regarding faith.

I wish I could better pinpoint my own discomfort with the Warrens. I do appreciate their contribution to Christian expression. But I consistently experience them as wearing humility as a thin cloak over the very evident ambition and pride (as in being convinced they have the answers) that seems to me to be the clear center of their being.

Rick speaks of regularly checking out this folder of other Christian leaders who have gotten into trouble. What about looking into his own life and questioning various issues? He says that he does not get involved with policy, but the past year has made it clear that he is using his considerable influence to set some pretty radical policies regarding human sexuality and relationship.

Kay says she is the chief of sinners, but doesn't elaborate. What does it say about a woman who lived and raised children through the 80's and 90's that she never knew what HIV meant before 2002? Who continues to communicate that she understands homosexuality to be a state of brokenness?

They both claim to want to communicate what Christianity is for, but they continue to state what they are against with a louder voice. And finally, what is Krista/SOF's fascination with this couple?

As Rick says, this is just the tip of the iceberg of my reflection. The bottom line is that I think they are rather dangerous, because the very integrity (openness, transparency, willingness to be called to task) that they claim is cleverly hidden. I would like to see a report that takes a tough stand in calling him on this.

Thanks for all you do. SOF is a remarkable resource for me!

Pleasantly Surprised by the Warrens

(August 26, 2008)

I'd not heard of Rick or Kay Warren until last week's political forum, and came to this podcast with a somewhat jaundiced eye about megachurches. However, I really was impressed with the Warrens' theology, and pleased that they have so much influence over so many people. Surely a lot of good will come of it! I'm sorry I was ready to write them off before I listened, and glad Krista made it possible for me to get more enlightened about their mission.

Inspirational

(August 25, 2008)

This interview with Rick and Kay Warren was inspirational! I felt reaffirmed in knowing that it is possible to be Christian and be open minded and accepting of others' differences. As Mr. Warren stated, Jesus was a friend of sinners.

He also gave the best explanation I have heard regarding why God allows suffering in the world. Mr. Warren said the reason there is hunger and suffering is not because God allows it, we as humans have allowed it to happen! It is because of our own greed and selfishness.

There is plenty of food in the world to feed everyone. There is enough money to clothe and provide medical care for everyone. But our sinful nature has not allowed this to happen, be it for political, religious or financial gain. Very interesting indeed.
