Comparative Passages from Three Translations of the Book of Exodus
Moses Kills an Egyptian (Exodus 2:11-15)

Tanakh: The Holy Scriptures
Some time after that, when Moses had grown up, he went out to his kinsfolk and witnessed their labors. He saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his kinsmen. He turned this way and that and, seeing no one about, he struck down the Egyptian and hid him in the sand. When he went out the next day, he found two Hebrews fighting; so he said to the offender, "Why do you strike your fellow?" He retorted, "Who made you chief and ruler over us? Do you mean to kill me as you killed the Egyptian?" Moses was frightened, and thought: Then the matter is known! When Pharaoh learned of the matter, he sought to kill Moses; but Moses fled from Pharaoh.
The Five Books of Moses
Now it was some years later, Moshe grew up; he went out to his brothers and saw their burdens. He saw an Egyptian man striking a Hebrew man, (one) of his brothers. He turned this-way and that-way, and seeing that there was no man (there), he struck down the Egyptian and buried him in the sand. He went out again on the next day, and here: two Hebrew men scuffling! He said to the guilty-one: For-what-reason do you strike your fellow? He said: Who made you prince and judge over us? Do you mean to kill me as you killed the Egyptian? Moshe became afraid and said: Surely the matter is known! Pharaoh heard of this matter and sought to kill Moshe. But Moshe fled from Pharaoh's face and settled in the land of Midyan; he sat down by a well.
New Revised Standard Version
One day, after Moses had grown up, he went out to his people and saw their forced labor. He saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his kinsfolk. He looked this way and that, and seeing no one he killed the Egyptian and hid him in the sand. When he went out the next day, he saw two Hebrews fighting; and he said to the one who was in the wrong, "Why do you strike your fellow Hebrew?" He answered, "Who made you a ruler and judge over us? Do you mean to kill me as you killed the Egyptian?" Then Moses was afraid and thought, "Surely the thing is known." When Pharaoh heard of it, he sought to kill Moses.

But Moses fled from Pharaoh. He settled in the land of Midian, and sat down by a well.
