Reinhold Niebuhr's Correspondence

Letter to Bishop Scarlett

Union Theological Seminary
Broadway at 120th Street
New York 27, N.Y.

June 17, 1960

Bishop Scarlett
Dyce's Head
Castine, Maine

Dear Will:

Thank you so much for your letter. I moved two days ago and our new
address is 340 Riverside Drive. We will be here for two weeks and
then will go on, my health permitting, to Santa Barbara.

What you report about the warning of the Archbishops pastoral about
students attending a non-Catholic university is, of course, typical of
the stand of Catholicism. The interesting thing is I am told that not
many people pay attention to this warning or are not disciplined for
this.

I am not going to vote for Kennedy if I can help it. I am not too
afraid of his Catholicism. It is very thin – indeed, his religion is
very thin.

Will you give my affectionate regards to the Ed Millers and to the Kirks
at their wedding party. Nancy is such a nice girl. The family have
been such good friends to us and I am sorry our paths have not crossed
too much in recent years.

Sincerely yours,
Reinhold Niebuhr
